Shipping a Corvette C6 to the UK? When it comes to the IVA modifications for the lights, ShipMyCar engineers have pioneered a method of ustilising Ultra Intensity LED bulbs to shine through existing lens clusters. Our LED’s are so powerful the light looks 100% amber when flashing.

The modifications are carried out using our in-house developed light control module to ensure the existing brake and indicator feeds are split safely and do not put any additional strain on the vehicle’s sensitive electrical systems

Here is a short video showing the light modifications in action:

The 2013 Shelby GT500 is an immense bit of kit and at ShipMyCar we have developed a unique IVA modification package to ensure the car keeps its original looks

In this article we will be discussing the rear light clusters which are made up of many tiny LED’s and a control module integrated into the clusters

For anybody thinking of shipping a GT500 to the UK we strongly advise against carrying out the below work on your car unless you are a trained IVA engineer. Our engineers are experienced in all makes/models of US vehicles shipped to the UK

The best way to modify a car shipped to the UK for the IVA test is to ensure modifications are carried out how they would have been in the factory, and ensuring no additional load is placed upon the sensitive electronics

We take apart the rear light clusters, dismantle each light control board and painstakingly replace each individual LED with the correct colour and intensity for UK road usage:

Shipping a BMW Z8 https://www.shipmycar.co.uk/shipping-a-bmw-z8/ Tue, 17 Apr 2012 11:15:20 +0000 http://www.shipmycar.co.uk/?p=1542 Importing a BMW Z8 into the UK can be very difficult due to the availability of European Rear Lights, luckily, ShipMyCar provide an alternative and can also help with shipping your new car to the UK....

The BMW Z8 was a roadster car produced by German automaker BMW from 1999 to 2003. It was given the E52 BMW model code.

The Z8 was the production variant of the 1997 Z07 concept car, which was designed by Henrik Fisker at BMW’s Designworks USA in Southern California. The Z07 originally was designed as a styling exercise intended to evoke and celebrate the 1956-’59 BMW 507. The Z07 caused a sensation at the ’97 Tokyo Auto Show. The overwhelming popularity of the concept spurred BMW’s decision to produce a limited production model called the Z8. There were 5,703 Z8s built, approximately half of which were exported to the U.S.

There are many good examples still selling in the USA and it is not a surprise that us Europeans would like to have these fantastic vehicles over here in the UK and EU, but it is not a simple process to get one back and register it for European use. First you have to contend with the car shipping process, including US collection, US customs, export procedures, containerising the car, marine insurance, UK customs, unloading and customs formalities. Be warned, doing this yourself is NOT for the faint hearted.

ShipMyCar.co.uk are the obvious choice to get your Z8 back into the UK/Europe (you can even get an INSTANT, no obligation breakdown of all costs involved using our quote system at www.shipmycar.co.uk), we handle all of the above export/import procedures to the highest of standards and as quickly as humanly possible.

We also ensure that the BMW is imported in the correct way as an EC Returning vehicle which means rather than 10% duty, you just pay £50 and then the VAT. This can save you potentially thousands of pounds….

Next are the modifications needed for MOT, a few Z8’s may still need IVA testing if under ten years old, but essentially, the modifications required in terms of IVA/MOT are the same anyway and include:

  • Rear Fog Light – this will be on the wrong side, we supply and fit new lenses and wire them up for you
  • New Headlights – these do not comply with UK/EU specification, we supply and fit your new OEM replacements
  • BMW ECU recoding – in order to separate the brake feed from the rear indicators we need to recode your BMW’s computer
  • New Brake Light Module – this is used in conjunction with recoding to ensure rear lights operate correctly
  • Rear Lights Conversion – US lights indicate red in colour which will not get through an IVA, we provide a factory-look solution by removing the neon tubes and replacing with LED, inside of your existing light cluster. This then provides amber indication and looks just how it is meant to.
  • Front sidelights – we disable the feed to these as they are not compliant with UK road laws

The clever engineers at ShipMyCar have created a Light Control Unit (LCU) which is a universal control box to safely power the lighting modifications needed for IVA / SVA / MOT testing requirements here in the UK

IVA Light Control Module
IVA Light Control Module

The new control module works in modern canbus powered vehicles and provides safe connection for the additional lights required e.g. Rear Fog Light, Reversing Light, Side Repeater Indicators…

IVA, SVA and MOT requirements in the UK require imported vehicles to have an ‘e’ marked rear fog light, side repeater indicators, and amber indicators which are separate to the brake lights – wiring these incorrectly can damage the cars ECU / Smart Junction Box – a common problem in Camaro’s, Corvettes and Mustangs Shipped to the UK

We strongly advise against carrying out IVA modifications yourself – our engineers are trained in IVA modification requirements on all makes/models of vehicles.

Thanks to advances in LED technology we can now offer ‘Invisible IVA’ modifications on most vehicles requiring IVA testing.

As petrol heads we understand that the worst thing about bringing a car back to the UK is the modifications for the IVA test – lights bolted on, holes drilled, horrible looking extra lights cut into bumpers etc etc

At ShipMyCar we always make our IVA modifications not only as safe on the vehicles delicate components as possible but also with as few modifications to the original look as we can manage and now we can go a huge step further….

Believe it or not, this Camaro has amber indicators and has passed a UK IVA test. Much nicer than those aftermarket clear lenses…..

What are invisible IVA modifications
New LED technology enables us to create amber bulbs which flash through red lenses, LED strips to hide away in wing mirrors and much more. By Invisible IVA we mean the car will look just like it did when it rolled off the production line

Why LED?
LED, or Light-Emitting Diodes have a very high intensity output, do not get hot and last up to 100,000 hours (basically the life of your car and then some). They are also highly directional which means they can shine straight through a red light cluster and give an amber light – perfect for IVA testing. With such a long life span they will never need changing except in very rare circumstances

Are they easy to change?
Our engineers at ShipMyCar have developed a method of fitting directional LED’s into adapted bulb holders so changing them is just like changing a normal car bulb, i.e. very very easily!
