Shipping a car that will fail MOT

At ShipMyCar we offer an all inclusive car shipping package which allows you to purchase a car from say the USA, Dubai, etc and have us handle the entire process from collection at seller’s address all the way through to UK testing and registration.

Since the UK government decided to relax the rules on cars not needing an MOT if they were manufactured pre-1960, we have seen some alarming cases of people shipping a car that is clearly not roadworthy and simply being able to register their import and drive it without any safety considerations

Some cars shipped into the UK can be extremely powerful, heavy and difficult to control. Combine that with dodgy brakes and failed suspension and you are asking for trouble. Other countries do not have such strict safety checks so the car you are buying or shipping may never have been checked over for many years.

Safety considerations when you have shipped a car

We recommend anybody who has shipped a car to the UK or is thinking of shipping a car, to consider having the car put through a voluntary MOT on arrival, that way you can check the car is safe for you and other road users.

For anybody shipping a pre-1960 vehicle to the UK and using our full car shipping package, we will do this as part of the process and recommend and changes required.

Insurance and un-roadworthy cars shipped to UK

The rules state that cars whether purchased in the UK or shipping to UK pre-1960 must still be in a ‘roadworthy condition’ – one would rightly expect therefore that if you were involved in a road traffic collision that the insurance company may deem the car unroadworthy and therefore jeopardise any potential insurance claim.

Another good reason to ship your car and make sure it is safe prior to registering it here.

Car Shipping

If you are thinking of shipping a car to the UK and would like the process to be as trouble free as possible, we strongly recommend using our fully inclusive import package which includes everything you will need.

We have developed a unique car shipping quote system to allow you to obtain a free and no obligation, instant breakdown of all costs involved in shipping a car back to the UK.

MOT for pre-1960 classic cars https://www.shipmycar.co.uk/mot-for-shipping-classic-car/ Wed, 27 Mar 2013 10:08:32 +0000 http://www.shipmycar.co.uk/?p=3491 Shipping a car to the UK that was manufactured prior to 1st January 1960? Well, the DVLA now have decided that your vehicle will be exempt from MOT testing - including the first MOT on arrival in the UK. This means you can ship a pre-1960 vehicle into the UK and register it (once you have cleared customs and insured the vehicle) with out having to put the car through an MOT first.

Shipping a car to the UK that was manufactured prior to 1st January 1960? Well, the DVLA now have decided that your vehicle will be exempt from MOT testing – including the first MOT on arrival in the UK. This means you can ship a pre-1960 vehicle into the UK and register it (once you have cleared customs and insured the vehicle) with out having to put the car through an MOT first.

It also means, when applying for future tax discs, you will not need to show a valid MOT certificate

The car must still be in a roadworthy condition when used on a public road and we assume usual insurance criteria will apply for example if you had a crash in a pre-1960 vehicle with worn tyres, it should be your responsibility to ensure the car was in good condition and so if deemed un-roadworthy we would assume you would not be insured.

Shipping a pre-1960 car and MOT

If shipping a car to the UK through ShipMyCar, you will notice our instant car shipping calculator still adds an MOT test – this is going to be our company policy to put every car we ship into the UK to be put through a voluntary MOT test on import to the UK, this is to ensure the vehicle is safe for you to drive away.

The voluntary MOT will be carried out on the car’s VIN number as the car will not be registered yet as per usual with new imports and so will not be stored in the MOT system, and we will be able to provide a quote for any MOT work to get the car in roadworthy condition.

Cars being shipping for example from the USA may not have had a safety check carried out for many years and so we feel it right for your safety to ensure we have at least checked it has been deemed safe by a qualified MOT test station, or any defects are made clear to
you prior to collection.

The clever engineers at ShipMyCar have created a Light Control Unit (LCU) which is a universal control box to safely power the lighting modifications needed for IVA / SVA / MOT testing requirements here in the UK

IVA Light Control Module
IVA Light Control Module

The new control module works in modern canbus powered vehicles and provides safe connection for the additional lights required e.g. Rear Fog Light, Reversing Light, Side Repeater Indicators…

IVA, SVA and MOT requirements in the UK require imported vehicles to have an ‘e’ marked rear fog light, side repeater indicators, and amber indicators which are separate to the brake lights – wiring these incorrectly can damage the cars ECU / Smart Junction Box – a common problem in Camaro’s, Corvettes and Mustangs Shipped to the UK

We strongly advise against carrying out IVA modifications yourself – our engineers are trained in IVA modification requirements on all makes/models of vehicles.

The ShipMyCar LCU incorporates sensitive relays with diode protection and easy to reach fuses to protect the circuits and your vehicle.

Should you require any information on car shipping or the IVA modifications required to ship a car to the UK, please do not hesitate to contact us
